Our intensivists are qualified anaesthesiologists with additional subspecialty training and experience in critical care medicine. They provide 24/7 consultant-led care in the Surgical and Transplant ICUs at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and are actively involved in the management of complex post-operative, transplant, and multi-organ failure patients.
We are committed to clear, decisive clinical leadership, evidence-based practice, and collaborative patient management in high-acuity environments. In addition to bedside care, our consultants contribute to the development of ICU protocols, registrar education, unit governance, and academic training.
Glenmarie de Wet
MBChB (Stellenbosch), DA (SA), FCA (SA)
Dr de Wet is an anaesthesiologist and intensivist with over a decade of experience in critical care. She has worked extensively in both public and private sector ICUs, with a focus on surgical and transplant intensive care. Her clinical interests include complex perioperative support and the integration of critical care systems. She has been actively involved in ICU care since 2012.
Joubert Steynberg

Dr Steynberg is a consultant anaesthesiologist and intensivist with a particular interest in perioperative care, organ transplantation, and critical care medicine. He plays an active role in ICU governance, teaching, and systems improvement. He currently serves as the Chairman of SASA Gauteng, a SASA Councillor, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa (Gauteng Branch). He also examines for the FCA (Part 1) through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
Mark Eagar
MBChB (UFS), DA (SA), FCA (SA), Certificate Critical Care (SA) Anaesthesia
Dr Eagar is a consultant anaesthesiologist and intensivist with a special interest in liver and kidney transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and perioperative intensive care. He is a member of the South African Transplant Society and serves on the committee of the Anaesthetic Foundation. He is passionate about transplant critical care, systems improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Emma Osmond

Dr Emma Osmond is our full-time medical officer, working alongside the ICU consultants to support clinical care in the Surgical and Transplant ICUs at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre. She assists with daily ward rounds, documentation, admissions, and coordination of patient care — providing consistent, hands-on support across the unit.
