Welcome to ICAN Critical Care

ICAN Critical Care consists of a team of specialist intensivists providing dedicated, consultant-led care in the Surgical and Transplant ICUs at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre. We manage critically ill patients across a broad range of surgical subspecialties, including abdominal organ transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, complex oncology, reconstructive surgery, neurosurgery and colorectal surgery.

Our intensivists are directly responsible for the daily care of ICU patients, ensuring consistent decision-making, early intervention, and high-level communication with the surgical teams. We provide 24/7 cover for the units, participate in consultant-led ward rounds, and are actively involved in patient and family communication, discharge planning, and transitions of care.

In addition to our clinical role, we contribute to ICU governance, morbidity and mortality audits, protocol development, and registrar teaching. Our consultants are actively engaged in academic teaching, research supervision, and national critical care initiatives.
